Kirby Games
Here's a list of all the Kirby games I've played.
I'll also mention whether I've completed the games and to what extent depending on the game.
Kirby Super Star Thoughts
Played either the Wii U version or Nintendo Switch version (don't remember) with my sister so we could extensively play all the game modes together. It was fun, the colours were a bit of an eye sore (this is the most magenta I've seen Kirby, it's also kinda wild how much more Super Star Ultra added).
What I specifically remember from this game is playing Great Cave Offensive with my sister; she had the stone ability and I was playing as Rocky. We were in an area that had an open pit, so I told her to change her ability because I knew she would hit the attack button and careen into the pit (she's notoriously trigger happy when it comes to games); she said she wouldn't do it and would be fine.
So we continue on in the stage, and not even 5 seconds into crossing pit I hear the telltale death jingle of my sister dropping into the pit; our brother was watching us play and according to him, I went through the five stages of grief in a second. I was so mad because the EXACT thing I was trying to prevent happened (still mildly annoyed thinking about this situation to this day).
Kirby's Dreamland 3 Thoughts
Played this with my sister on the Dream Collection, while we played this as teens/adults(?) we would've love this game as kids! The style is so soft looking and pretty! I remember watching my sister doing the boss rush and Dedede's battle being so pretty with those petals blowing in the breeze; his theme in this game's awesome too!
I played as Gooey while my sister played as Kirby. I liked going around helping all the denizens of Pop Star, even the surprise guests (wasn't expecting to see Samus here of all places)! I remember we wouldn't proceed to the next stages unless we completed the quest for the character.
I liked having the animals friends too; there was a specific stage on the spaceship where I had Pitch witht the spark ability, I'd toss him and stand on a specific platform so he'd be indefinitely circling me. Doing this prevented my sister from leaving the specific room, she would get so annoyed at me (considering the endless things she used to annoy me with, it felt good to be the annoyer for once)!
I remember during the final battle with Zero, my sister kept dying to the point I got so agitated and told her just to keep Zero busy by going in a circle while I dealt all the damage; thinking back to this moment now, it's pretty funny.
Kirby 64: The Crystal Shard Thoughts
Another fav of mine! I mostly remember watching my siblings (mainly my sister) play through this game when we were young until I eventually played myself on the Dream Collection. This one's on the slower side for a Kirby game (movement wise, which surprised me) but still a ton of fun!
First of all the aesthetics look great and holds up today (Kirby really works well in any medium), the gameplay's fun with its combo abilities (the fireworks and ninja star are a personal fav), and the music's awesome (some tracks have a noisy feel to them that newer games can't seem to capture, must be the soundfont)!
My favourite stages are stage 1 and 2 from Pop Star, stage 3 and 4 from Shiver Star, and stages 1 and 3 from Ripple Star. My favourite songs are Planet Pop Star, Battle Among Friends 3 (vs. King Dedede) Inside the Ruins, and Miracle Matter! I liked collecting all the enemy cards too; it's just nice to see what the enemies are called (I'm particularly fond of the enemy Bo).
The sub games were really fun too (as infuriating as some of them were courtesy of my sister), Bumper Crop Bump is my favourite; I always wanted to eat those fruits, they looked so tasty. I like the sound test too, how Kirby would react depending on which song played; just a cute and fun little detail.
Kirby Air Ride Thoughts
A favourite of mine! There's a lot to love about this game; while all the modes are fun, city trial is by far the best! I had a lot of fond (and not so fond) memories and experiences playing this game. I think my favourite part of this game was working towards completing all the checklists with my sister; just feels good to see that gold fully cleared checklist.
I like using the Wheelie Bike the best, but would use the Swerve Star, Shadow Star, and Compact Star if it didn't show up in the round. My sister used the Wheelie Scooter (and was an absolute menace when we were kids) while my brother alternated between the Wing and Shadow Star or Hydra (if available). I like using Dragoon out of the two legendary air rides.
When we were younger, we delegated specific areas as our 'homes'; my home was the electric lounge, my sister's was the castle hall, and my brother's was the forest (it kinda sucked when the chamber opened up with a bunch of good items in the castle hall though 'cause my sister would get there really fast due to all the top speeds she'd collected and guraded the area like a hawk, thus getting all the spoils).
My favourite events are the UFO, item boxes with the same item, and the pillar. There are these little flowers, one up on the cliff near the volcano and the other of the very top of castle hall, that we named Daisy and Holly; we found them when either my sister and I were wildly flying around the sky with Dragoon.
Hell, even in free play we made little games too; one was hide and seek where one of us would hide a ride or multiple in various locations while the other kept their eyes shut while the other game was crashing rides into each other on the rail station to see which was stronger.
Out of the stadium games, I like Drag Race (fav song from this game), Target Flight (despite rarely being on a suitable ride), and Kirby Melee. The race rounds I like are Fantasy Meadows, Celestial Valley, and Sky Sands. I specifically remeber when my sister got a lot of top speeds once when we were racing on Celestial Valley to the point where she drove off the stage and died; didn't even know it was possible to retire from race rounds until that happened, so funny though.
Kirby Canvas Curse Thoughts
A different and fun Kirby game! I really like how the backgrounds for the stages were all different styles and colours! I like how you could customize the paths you drew for Kirby (can't remember if I changed mine though but went back to the rainbow pattern).
The music of this game is great too; I particularly like vs. Drawcia, Paint Panic, and Cart Run!
I remember when I was working towards 100 percenting this game, I was playing cart run specifically and it was taking a while, I decided to look in my sister's file to see what ranks she got on her sub games; she had A ranks on them all but block attack had an AA rank (I wasn't aware there were higher ranks for these minigames, and when I asked her how all she did was shrug).
I also remember the commercial for Canvas Curse of Kirby travelling aroung with a giant index finger and it helping him cross a gap and pushing him on a swing set; I even remember the slogan they had for the DS 'touching is good' or something. It was a weird and endearing commercial and I wouldn't have it any other way (a lot of commercials from the GBA, Gamecube, DS, and Wii era were kinda strange now that I think about it. Memorable though).
Kirby Squeak Squad Thoughts
One of my favourite Kirby games; I remember playing through this multiple times! The gameplay's fun, I liked how you could hold onto abilities and food for later, and I love how you could customize Kirby's colour (loved playing as red but really liked the sapphire, chocolate, snow, and cherry palettes).
The mixing of abilities was really fun too! I used tornado mainly for this game and like combining it with spark especially! I liked using animal, u.f.o. (rarely got this ability often, otherwise I would've use it more), ghost, and cupid as well (cute but was so slow though).
I like both the boss battle songs from this game, they're so upbeat! Dark Nebula's theme was pretty cool too, but that boss was a pushover; I had a harder time on Dark Daroach!
Another nice touch of this game is how it would wish you happy birthday with an adorable pic with the cast, cake and everything! I wasn't expecting that at all so it was really sweet!
Kirby Super Star Ultra Thoughts
The new and improved Kirby Super Star! I played this through download play with my sister then eventually on my own once she 100 percented the game (specifically with Kirby games, she always gets first dibs and plays them to 100% because she loves Kirby so much). I also remember playing as Waddle Doo and attacking everything in sight to the point where my sister couldn't get any different abilities, good times
I liked using plasma the best but used cutter and beam as well. My favourite modes were Milky Way Wishes, Helper to Hero (I love playing as the partners, you didn't have to worry about losing your ability), and The True Arena. It was just nice to have a helper along too.
I like Galacta Knight and his theme; his design's very cool and his theme is so intense and noisy!
Kirby's Epic Yarn Thoughts
This game is very fun and relaxing; playing it for too long makes you real sleepy though (it's the combination of the music and the visuals). The story book-like narration of the game is very amusing ("It feels like... Pants." is forever ingrained in my brain); it's not very often where you get to know Kirby's thoughts either which is nice.
Naturally, I played this with my sister (Prince Fluff is very cute). I like how you can't really die in this game like other Kirby games (at least up until you get to Dream Land) and I really like the yarn, cloth, button look of this game; it's just so adorable!
Kirby's Return to Dreamland Thoughts
This game is so much fun! Played this with my siblings; my sister played as Kirby, my brother played as Metaknight, and I played as Bandana Dee (where my love of the spear ability sprouted, I already adored Bandana Dee and Waddle Dees in general).
While this game is fun on its own, it's much more enjoyable and chaotic to play with others. I liked the new bosses to fight, the new abilities added, and the addition of the super abilities; I think super beam is the coolest but I remember enjoying watching my sister cycle through slices with super sword to see what the sword would turn into.
Favourite song for this game is definitely Welcome Your New Overlord (Vs. Magolor); this song fit the battle to a tee and has a noisy feel to it like Miracle Matter! Plus during the boss fight, it was cool to see the exact moment when the Master Crown took over Magalor (in phase two where you needed the super abilities to break Magolor's shields.
I also fondly remember my sister letting me get the final hits in before the true final fight during our second run of the game (likely when we were collecting all the energy spheres of the hard mode of the game).
Kirby Mass Attack Thoughts
This game was real different from the usual Kirby games, I liked it though. The sprites of the little Kirbies are really cute and their idle animations are precious (never liked hearing or seeing them die though, just felt bad).
It was cool to see the Squeak Squad again, I liked going back to their ship to see what info/gossip Daroach had to share!
I liked the songs Tree to Tree and Night Desert (I'll always enjoy when a song from Air Ride pops up in a newer Kirby game!) and the spritework of this game's really pretty!
Kirby's Dream Collection Special Edition Thoughts
Pretty sure this is where I played Dreamland 3 and 64 but I'll talk about those in their respective sections.
This game's fun, I more remember playing it for Dreamland 3 since my sister and I never got to play it before, but the little challenges Magolor set up were fun.
The little museum section of the prior Kirby games was cool too; a good game for Kirby's anniversary.
Kirby Triple Deluxe Thoughts
I really liked Triple Deluxe! The stages are pretty and the gameplay's fun (don't remember using the hypernova ability a lot in this game but I kinda feel like it didn't really matter. The music is great (Sullied Grace is so dramatic and cool!) and the new abilities are awesome (beetle and bell are definitely favs)!
Sectonia's boss battle is really fun and cool too! Her design's gorgeous as well (kinda nuts that she apparently used to look similarly to Taranza).
Kirby Fighters Deluxe Thoughts
It's Smash Bros if it was Kirby, it's fun! I think I played as cutter, parasol, and beetle.
I wasn't crazy about the control style for this Kirby game. I liked how the stages were reference to different areas in prior Kirby games (particularly the factory and the fountain of dreams)
Dedede's Drum Dash Deluxe Thoughts
A very fun rhythm game that I go back to replay! I adored that they did a rendition of the City theme from Kirby Air Ride; definitly a fav stage to play!
Boarding the Halberd and C-R-O-W-N-E-D were also favourites too. I liked the little masks you could make Dedede wear and how they'd make a little sound on the fourth beat of songs (the Taranza mask's little trilling noise was adorable)!
It was a lot of fun to learn the patterns of each stage, easy and hard (I always end up replaying the harder stages), and I liked seeing the enemies in the stage move to the music as well.
Kirby and the Rainbow Curse Thoughts
Played this alongside my sister so I could play as Bandana Dee. Claymation is a very good look for Kirby games!
I liked the songs Up the Big Ol' Tree and Beware the Forest Fungus; the remixes they did for songs from prior Kirby games were cool too (shout out to Coo's theme in particular)!
Kirby Planet Robobot Thoughts
Robobot is such a cool game! I like the new abilities added (the Ness reference with ESP is cool) and the robobot armour was fun to play with; I liked using the mike ability with the armour in particular. The story's interesting with the Haltman corporation too; straight up crazy that they were builing a new Nova!
I frickin' loved the boss rush of this game; it was so intense! I used parasol when I did it 'cause I remember watching a video of another playing using parasol to beat it; I thought it was the coolest shit ever. That move where the heart of Nova splits in half and crashes into each other to make a big explosion was so brutal but cool!
Like specifically the final bit where you're facing off against the phases of Star Dream/Nova was so cool! The music really added to the intensity of the battle too.
I remember in my successful attempt of the boss rush, I lost my parasol ability and as I was inhaling to retrieve it, the heart of Star Dream teleported in front of me and did the cutter attack; right in front of my ability. Luckily cutter was my initial go to ability when playing Kirby so I was still able to beat them! It was intense because there's not a lot of room for error in that battle (or in this boss rush in general).
Team Kirby Clash Deluxe Thoughts
Fun little game; I played this alongside my sister. I was surprised that the sub game from Robobot got adapted to a full-on game.
I like the mage class and the designs for all the gear! My only gripe is that you can't wear your favourite gear with the stats of the best gear; don't get me wrong, the platinum gear is pretty but a bit gaudy for my tastes.
Kirby Battle Royale Thoughts
Had a lot of fun with this one; it's like if Kirby were a Mario Party game with more violence!
I remember really going ham in the Apple Scramble game and really enjoying Rocket Rumble and Ore Express.
I played mostly as Waddle Dee/Parasol, but played as Mirror, Spear, and Beetle; I really liked the charge attack for Mirror, it was like a ferris wheel!
Kirby Star Allies Thoughts
It was really cool to see all Kirby's friends, past and present, all in one place! The combination abilities were great too! I particularly like using yo-yo with any elemental ability.
The lore was pretty nuts in this game as we essentially got to learn the origins of Kirby (or his species I think). I always liked reading the little lore bits in the pause menu; I just think it's interesting.
I was real happy to see Burnin' Leo and Plugg make a reappearance; they haven't been seen since forever, so it's nice to see old obscure enemies (or I guess allies in this case) come back!
Liked the music as well, specifically Sacred Square, Hyness (Unhooded), and Void Termina (Innards Phase)!
Super Kirby Clash Thoughts
A lot of my memories of this game kinda merged with the 3DS version of the game, so I ended up revisiting this game in April 2025.
It is an improved version of the 3DS version; more gear to collect, more achievemnts to attempt, and tougher bosses to fight! The main thing that detracts from this game is the internet problems; some bosses work no problem and others are wrought with network errors. Aside from that, it's a solid game.
I mainly play as the mage class alonside my sister but occasionlly use the healer class if needed; depends on the boss. I really like the rose gear and magical girl gear for the mage, and the Chuchu gear and dark Taranza gear for the healer!
Never a fan of when multiplayer games lock achievements behind online play though; because of the network error with specific bosses, you kinda have to hope nobody joins your room to fight the boss solo which is tedious because playing with other players speed up the fights (most times) and the computer players are pretty dumb. Though this is more of an issue if you're one to like completing games to 100% (like me).
Edit: figured out a way to get those multiplayer achievements I was gunning for; couch co-op. Helps that you can use 5 strength potions too as opposed to the 1 with online matches. Felt good to obliterate specific bosses like Pyribbit and the Mr. Frosty/Mr.Floaty duo.
Kirby and the Forgotten Land Thoughts
I adore Forgotten Land! I love the upgrades added to the abilities, particularly crystal needle (have not stopped thinking about it ever since I played this game; it's just so beautiful!). Seeing Kirby's mouthful modes were incredibly funny and the story's pretty cool too; I was not expecting the change in tone once you got to the laboratory. And Fecto Elfilis is just gorgeous and intimidating, such a cool final boss!
I initially played with my sister (I love playing as Bandana Dee) when playing through this game before playing myself; it was cute seeing Bandana Dee balancing on Kirby whenever he had a mouthful ability.
I really liked the music of this game too! Particularly Plundering Beast Battle, Roar of Dedede, and Two Planets Approach the Roche Limit; they're so upbeat and climactic!
Kirby's Dream Buffet Thoughts
Dream Buffet is a lot of fun! I feel like I didn't play it for too long (likely another game I was looking forward to came out, or I was in the middle of playing another game.
Not that's it's a game that necessarily has an end; just a game you can pick up and put down anytime. The food aesthetics make me really hungry though. I like the colour palettes and hats you can give your Kirby; reminds me of Squeak Squad and it's nice seeing references to the older titles.
